What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy is concerned with the management of disorders of speech, language, communication and swallowing in children and adults.

Speech disorder refers to a problem with the actual production of speech sounds. E.g:- Articulation disorders, fluency disorders (stammering) etc.

Language disorders include receptive and expressive disorders.

Receptive disorders: difficulties in understanding and processing language.

Expressive disorders: difficulty putting words together, limited vocabulary or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way.

A speech-language pathologist is responsible for the diagnosis, prognosis, prescription, and remediation of speech, language, and swallowing disorders. A speech-language pathologist evaluates and treats children and adults who have difficulty speaking, listening, reading, writing, or swallowing.
